Hidden Unities

Beyond Iowa: For McCain & Obama

Dan argues the case far better than I can (though later this year if events bear out it will be well-worth revisiting). No race would be a better contrast for the country to consider nor as inherently positive in its ramifications.  Both men appeal strongly to the center without the need to resort to shameless ignorance (Rudy G) or dishonest cynicism (Mrs. Clinton).  Both men have been defined thus far in life by their pragmatism, whether it has served them well or not.  Both men actually manage to have convictions and live them (Obama’s opposition to the war, McCain’s sanity on immigration reform).  We could go for days here.  They are simply the best candidates for their parties and for the nation.  We could have an honest to God horse race that would entail real differences, honest debate and difficult choices.  Not to mention its the only race I cannot personally decide between right now.
