One not-so-quick question I’m curious about and hope you can answer (or tell me how to find the answer. How many countries in the world (besides the US) have the logistic and other expertise needed to operate an American-style Carrier group? I know Russia, France and the UK have or have had Aircraft Carriers in recent decades, I don’t know who else. Thank you for any light you can shed on the subject.
No problem. India already operates a carrier group. The Japanese and South Koreans are working on carrier-esque projects that would be different from the American style but still pass muster as credible carrier assets. China as well. That is it as far as I know.
That isn’t true entirely accurate. Neither India nor South Korea have modern carrier groups- India has a single carrier from a 50 year old UK navy castoff. The UK has two and a smaller task force group. In fact none of the Third World has a carrier group and the Russians have left what remains of their very limited carrier capabilities (the Russians claimed that carrier groups were by design imperialistic) in port with little maintenance. The Japanese have no carrier groups.
Of course missile technology is changing the odds but this is another area where the powers- specifically the US completely dominate things. Part of the reason things stay this way is that it would be considered one of the most hostile and provocative acts a nation could make vis a vis the US to build modern fully equipped carrier groups. It is on par with ICBM’s, and nuclear powered ballistic subs. Besides the mistake of China (Gen. MacArthur should be canonized) and the unavoidable situation in Russia America has been good about maintaining complete dominance and the poor nations have been good about staying backwards and uncompetitive.

Hi, I’ve been researching the role of non profit organizations, such as Patricia Kennedy’s StepUp4Vets (http://www.stepup4vets.org) – You mention that there are many who are being ’shafted’ by the government. Do you think this is the VAs fault or does it go higher on the chain? Who doesn’t want to help veterans, isn’t that an integral part of our government? Are they just shoving all the help into private sectors such as what i mentioned above? The public does seem uninformed about the true happenings of war, due to the average american seeming to be glued to the television. This whole thing reminds me of 4 decades ago.
It goes higher up the chain, because the funding is following the need, the higher-ups aren’t listening to the VA and the veterans’ groups who understand where the money is needed and how much. They are not a strong enough constituency to inspire fear in Washington, unlike say, the elderly or Latinos.
And yes, these battles are literally ongoing since WW1, even before Vietnam. There were bright spots after WW2, and that was it.
